UC Irvine 79, Stanford 63
UC-Irvine shoots down Stanford
PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- California-Irvine made Dan
Grunfeld's return to Stanford's lineup an unpleasant experience.
Ross Schraeder and Darren Fells combined for 37 points as the
Anteaters shot lights out and spoiled the 13th-ranked Cardinal
season opener, 79-63.
Grunfeld, the team's leading scorer last year at nearly 18
points per game, missed the final nine games of the season with
a torn ACL in his right knee. The guard led Stanford with 29
points, but it wasn't enough to overcome 65 percent (30-of-46)
shooting by UC-Irvine.
The Anteaters blistered the nets at 75 percent (18-of-24),
including a perfect 6-of-6 from the arc, to build a 43-35 lead
at halftime, before pulling away in the second.
Schraeder was 7-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from the
arc, and Fells connected on 6-of-7 attempts.
Grunfeld shot 9-of-21 from the floor and converted 9-of-10 from
the line, but he didn't get any help from his teammates. The
rest of the squad connected on 13-of-40 for a team percentage of
36 percent (22-of-61).
Chris Hernandez was the only other Cardinal in double figures
with 13 points, but he missed nine of 13 shots.
Starting forward Matt Haryasz, who averaged 12.5 points and 9.1
rebounds last season, did not play for Stanford due to an ankle
injury suffered in practice on Friday.
It was UC-Irvine's first win in six all-time meetings with
Stanford.
