For the second consecutive year, UC Irvine swept the Big West men's and women's golf championships in a close race to the finish with UC Davis.  The Anteater men shot a blistering 10-under par in the final round to pull away to a six-stroke victory while the Anteater women, who won their fourth title in a row, held off the late charging Aggies.

All four scoring UCI golfers had scores under par in Tuesday’s final round, led by a pair of 68s from sophomore John Chin and junior Tim Cha.  Chin earned men's individual medalist honors after shooting 10 shots under par over the final 36 holes, finishing at 9-under 207 (73-66-68).

Junior Sean Shahi placed second at 6-under 210 (68-70-72) while Cha's 70-73-68 gave him a 211 total and tied him for third overall with Nate Pistacchio of UC Davis.

UC Davis, which was tied with UCI for the team lead at 5-under after 36 holes, pulled out to as much as a four-stroke lead midway through the final round.  Despite shooting a solid 4-under 284 and finishing at 9-under 855 overall as a team, the Aggies settled for a second place finish in their first-ever Big West championship.

Sophomore Gregg Button and freshman Austin Graham tied for sixth place at 2-under 214 after carding a 70 and 72, respectively.  They joined Pistacchio as a trio of Aggie golfers in the top 10.

Cal State Northridge finished in a third place after posting its best round - a 4-under 284 - keyed by freshman Nick Delio's 65, the tournament's lowest round.  The Matadors finished at 9-over 873.  Pacific came in fourth place (878), UC Santa Barbara was fifth (885) and UC Riverside sixth (888).  Cal Poly and Long Beach State rounded out the men's standings.

On the women's side, UC Davis shot the lowest round (298) of any team on Tuesday, trimming three strokes off of a 10-shot deficit entering the day.  However, that would not prevent the Anteaters from winning their fourth straight title.  UCI finished at 44-over 908 (312-295-301) while UCD came in second at 51-over 915 (305-312-298).

UCI senior Kim Lorenzana defeated UC Davis freshman Chelsea Stelzmiller in a three hole playoff to earn individual medalist honors.  Lorenzana shot a final round 72 to whittle away Stelzmiller's six shot lead and force the playoff.  Both golfers carded a 54-hole total of 6-over 222.

Senior Selanee Henderson and freshman Patty Chawalitmetha finished in third and fourth, respectively, to aid the Anteater effort.  Henderson posted consecutive rounds of 74 to finish at 9-over 225 (77-74-74), while Chawalitmetha had an 11-over 227 (77-71-79).

UCD freshman Alice Kim and Katie Sisler - who combined to shoot 28 shots over par through the first two rounds - did their best to rally the Aggies by shooting 1-over on Tuesday.  Kim's 72 and Sisler's 73 moved both Aggies into the individual top 10.

Cal State Northridge replicated its finish on the men's side, placing third at 938.  Cal Poly (941), Long Beach State (942) and UC Riverside (947) rounded out the women's standings.

The tournament concluded with the announcement of the 2008 Big West all-conference awards.  UC Irvine's John Chin and Paul Smolinski were selected Men's Golfer and Coach of the Year.  Cal State Northridge's Nick Delio earned Men's Freshman of the Year honors.  Chelsea Stelzmiller of UC Davis was chosen both Women's Golfer and Freshman of the Year.  UC Irvine's Julie Brooks was tabbed the Women's Coach of the Year.
