JEFFERIES, GAMBOA LEAD AGGIES TO SERIES-
OPENING VICTORY OVER CAL POLY, 3-2

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior catcher Jake Jefferies drove
in all three UC Davis runs, which included a walk-
off single, and senior right-hander Eddie Gamboa
pitched a complete-game three-hitter to lead the
Aggies to a 3-2 victory over Cal Poly in the opening
game of a Big West Conference series at Dobbins
Stadium Friday afternoon.

With the win, which came off a walk-off single for
the second consecutive game, the Aggies surpass
last season's win total with a 25-11 overall record
and improve to 6-1 in conference. The loss snaps a
four-game winning streak for the Mustangs and
drops them to 15-19 overall and 3-7 in conference
play. Cal Poly had won five straight over UC Davis
heading into Friday's game.

"Good teams find a way to win," said Aggie coach
Rex Peters. "We've proven throughout the season
that we can find ways to win close games and we
did that again today. Eddie (Gamboa) got ahead in
the counts and was able to keep them off balance.
We just finally took advantage of our opportunities
in the ninth inning."

Jefferies finished with two hits, a double and all
three of the Aggies' RBI's. Ty Kelly matched Cal
Poly's total number of hits with three and also
scored a run. This is the fourth consecutive game
Kelly has recorded at least three hits. Ryan Royster
had multiple hits in his second straight game and
scored a run.

Gamboa pitched his second complete game of the
season and did not allow an earned run to notch
his team-leading sixth victory of the season. He
also struck out a game-best three batters and
allowed only three hits.

The Aggies rallied in the ninth inning after
recording their second out to load the bases for
Jefferies. Royster and Scott Heylman singled to
begin the rally and Kelly loaded the bags with a
four-pitch walk. Jefferies sent the second pitch he
saw over the left fielder's head to lead the Aggies to
their second consecutive walk-off victory.

Brent Morel was the offensive leader for the
Mustangs as he doubled and drove in a run. Pat
Pezet accounted for the other Cal Poly RBI. Brian
Grening pitched the final 3.1 innings in the loss.

Cal Poly scored both of its runs off Aggie errors.
They took a one-run lead after the first inning
behind an error on the UC Davis first baseman.
Morel doubled down the right field line the next at
bat to plate the first run.

UC Davis took the lead in the third inning behind a
Jefferies' two-run double. Much like the ninth
inning, the Aggies rallied with two outs behind a
walk to Royster and a Kelly single to put runners on
first and second for Jefferies, who doubled down
the left field line.

The Mustangs tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth
inning off a sacrifice bunt from Pezet. The sacrifice
scored Josh Thomas from third. Thomas reached
on a two-base error by the center fielder to lead off
the inning.

The Aggies left the bases loaded in the eighth
inning before breaking through to score the winning
run in the ninth.

The series resumes tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game is
part of the annual Picnic Day celebrations at UC
Davis and will also feature little league day.
