MIDDLE-INNING SURGE LEADS AGGIES PAST
GONZAGA, 8-2

DAVIS, Calif. - Scott Heylman and Grant Hirneise
had multiple RBI's, and UC Davis scored all eight of
its runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to
defeat Gonzaga, 8-2, in a non-conference baseball
game at Dobbins Stadium Monday afternoon. It
was the first Division I baseball game between the
two schools.

The Aggies pushed their season-best win streak to
seven straight games and are now 13-7 overall
while the Bulldogs, who had won three straight
heading into the game, fall to 15-9.

Heylman finished the day 2-for-3 with a game-high
three RBI's and a run scored while Hirneise drove
in two runs and scored a game-high two runs. Ty
Kelly, Kevin James and Matt Dempsey also drove
in runs.

In addition, Ryan Royster went 3-for-4 with a
double and Jake Jefferies improved his season-
best hitting streak to 15 straight games with a
double in the seventh inning.

Jason Chatwood led the Bulldogs with a game-high
four hits and an RBI. Teammate Marcus McKimmy
drove in a run off three hits.

Gonzaga missed opportunities to put runs on the
board through the first four innings of the game as
they hit nine singles but stranded nine runners.
They out-hit the Aggies, 13-10, overall but did not
record an extra-base hit in the game. Bulldog
starting pitcher AJ Proszek allowed only two hits
through those first four innings, but gave up seven
runs in two innings to earn the loss.

Gonzaga loaded the bases in the third inning with
only one out, but Aggie starter Brad McAtee got the
next two batters to pop up to end the threat.

After allowing the first run of the game in the fourth
inning, the Aggies exploded in the bottom of the fifth
with four runs. Heylman highlighted the inning with
a two-run single to center field to score Hirneise
and James. Hirniese and Kelly drove in the other
runs in the inning.

UC Davis tacked on three more runs in the sixth
and another in the seventh to jump ahead 8-1.
Hirneise drove in the first run in the sixth and was
followed by sacrifice bunt RBI from Dempsey and
another Heylman single to the outfield that brought
home a run. James doubled home Jefferies in the
bottom of the seventh to bring in the final Aggie run.

Jeremy McChesney pitched four effective innings of
relief as he allowed only one hit and struck out two
batters while facing just one over the minimum to
earn his first win of the season.

The Bulldogs would score another run in the ninth
inning of McKimmy's RBI single, but failed to get a
rally going.

UC Davis continues its busy week tomorrow when
they travel to Saint Mary's to play the Gaels at 2
p.m. That game will be simulcast live on KDVS 90.3
and ucdavisaggies.com.
