UC DAVIS SWEEPS SERIES FROM SANTA CLARA

DAVIS, Calif. - Ryan Scoma and Ty Kelly combined to drive in seven runs off six hits and UC Davis scored in all but one inning en route to a 12-7 victory over Santa Clara Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. The win gave UC Davis a four-game series sweep over the Broncos.

The Aggies have now won a season-best six games in a row to improve their overall record to 12-7 heading into finals week. It is also the second consecutive four-game sweep for the Aggies as they also took four from Utah two weeks ago. The Broncos fall to 10-7 with today's loss.

"We're starting to play better defensively and we're pitching better as well," said Aggie coach Rex Peters. " We played pretty well all weekend and were able to get a sweep over a very good Santa Clara team. "

Scoma finished with a game-high four RBIs and went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a double, three runs scored and a three-run homer to improve his team-leading batting average to .482. Kelly also had three hits on the day to go with a double and three RBIs.

Jake Jefferies also contributed three hits and an RBI while Matt Demspey matched him with three hits and two RBIs. It marked the 14th straight game in which Jefferies has recorded a hit. Ryan Royster was the fifth Aggie to get three hits in the game and hit his team-best fifth homer of the year while also scoring three times. Grant Hirneise tripled in a run to round out the Aggies with RBIs.

Right-hander Jeff Reekers won his second game of the season by allowing only three runs and striking out two batters in five innings. Bronco starter Jeff Lombard gave up five runs in the loss.

The Aggies scored runs in every inning but the sixth. They highlighted the day with multiple runs in the first, third and seventh innings. Kelly and Scoma drove in runs in the first inning to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead. The Broncos tied the game at 2-2 after the second inning behind a two-run homer from Jon Karcich.

Jefferies singled home a run in the bottom half of the second to put the Aggies back up. A two-RBI single from Demspey highlighted a three-run third. The Aggies added single runs in the fourth inning off Hirneise's triple and another in the fifth off a double from Kelly. The Broncos scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth the cut the lead to 8-5.

UC Davis would add three more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth the jump back ahead, 12-5. Scoma hit a three-run shot in the seventh and was followed by a solo shot from Royster in the eighth.

Santa Clara managed two more runs in the top of the ninth.

The Aggies take off next week for finals before returning to action against Gonzaga at home on Monday, March 24 .
