REEKER’S COMPLETE GAME LEADS AGGIES PAST HORNETS
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior right-hander Jeff Reekers threw his second career complete game against Sacramento State and three different Aggies drove in multiple runs to lead UC Davis to a 12-3 victory over the Hornets Sunday afternoon in a Causeway Cup baseball game at Hornet Field. The game marked the completion of the fifth annual River City Classic.
The Aggies, who scored a combined 42 runs over the weekend, ended a season-long four-game losing skid and avoided a sweep in the classic to even their overall record at 7-7. Sac State falls to 2-8 with the loss and drops 1.67 points to UC Davis in the overall Causeway Cup point race, which has already been locked up by the Aggies.
"This is a positive way to end the weekend," said Aggie coach Rex Peters. "Every team goes through a losing streak and hopefully this win gets us going back in the right direction."
Reekers is now 4-0 against Sac State with two compete games in his Aggie career. He allowed only three runs off nine hits and struck out four batters to earn his first win of the season.
Junior Kevin James had the best overall day for UC Davis offensively as he went 2-for-2 with a double and game-highs of three runs scored and three RBIs. Seniors Ryan Royster and Matt Dempsey each had three hits in five at bats with two RBIs and a combined three runs scored. One of Royster's RBIs was a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning.
Junior Jake Jefferies improved his team-leading hitting streak to a season-best nine games with three hits, a double and an RBI. Junior transfer Ryan Scoma also had two hits and an RBI while freshman Scott Heylman accounted for the other Aggie RBI.
Ryan Blair, David Flores and Wes Oberlin each had RBIs for Sac State. Starter Corey Weglin gave up six runs in 2.2 innings in the loss. Overall, the Hornets used six pitchers in the two hour and 53 minute ballgame.
The Hornets led briefly after the first inning, 1-0, before the Aggie bats came alive. UC Davis scored two runs in the second inning to take the lead and tacked on four more in the third to jump ahead 6-1. James drove in the first run for UC Davis off a double and was driven home two batters later by Heylman. James doubled again in the third inning to drive home two more and highlight the big Aggie inning.
UC Davis put up its third consecutive scoring inning in the fourth off an RBI double from Jefferies. They put up four more runs in the seventh to up its lead to 11-2. Three of those UC Davis runs came off throwing errors on the Hornets.
The Aggies travel to Reno on Wednesday for a game with Nevada at 2 p.m. They then host two games in a four-game series with Santa Clara over the weekend.
