VARGAS POWERS BYU PAST UC DAVIS, 11-8

DAVIS, Calif. - Dan Vargas went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs to help lead BYU past UC Davis, 11-8, in a non-conference baseball game at Dobbins Stadium Saturday morning. The game was part of the third day of the fifth annual River City Classic.

UC Davis has now dropped its last four games and its first three of the River City Classic to fall to 6-7 overall. The Cougars improve to 6-7 with the win and finishes 2-2 at the classic.

BYU fell behind 8-4 after five innings as starting pitcher Jake Wortham was tagged for all eight runs off 10 hits. Blake Torgerson came on in the seventh inning and shut down the UC Davis bats and allowed only one run through the remainder of the game. BYU continued to score runs and threw up four in the seventh, one in the eight and two more in the ninth to take the eventual three-run win.

Vargas led a group of five BYU players who had hits in the game. J.T. Musso also had a solid game for the Cogars with three hits and three RBIs. Torgerson got his second victory of the year.

Sophomore Kyle Mihaylo led the Aggies offensively with a three-run homer in the fourth inning and a double in the second inning. Senior Evan Hudson drove in two runs off two hits and scored two more while junior transfer Ryan Scoma went 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Freshmen Alex Dreyfuss and Daniel Cepin accounted for the other Aggie RBIs.

BYU jumped ahead 3-0 after the second inning. J.T. Musso drove home two runs with a triple to right field and scored the third run himself on an overthrown ball that went into the Cougar dugout.

Mihaylo tied the score at 3-3 with one swing of the bat in the fifth as he connected on a home run to left field. UC Davis added five more runs in the sixth inning to go ahead 8-4. Hudson highlighted the big showing with a two-run single to left field.

Today's game was the final contest in a season-long nine-game homestand for UC Davis. They travel to Sacramento State tomorrow for the final game of the River City Classic at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ucdavisaggies.com.
