THREE-RUN FIFTH SPARKS SAN JOSE STATE
TO 6-3 WIN OVER UC DAVIS

DAVIS, Calif. - Kyle Bellows and Corey Valine each
drove in a game-high two runs and San Jose State
used a three-run fifth inning to defeat UC Davis, 6-
3, in a non-conference baseball game at Dobbins
Stadium Friday afternoon. The game was part of the
second day of the River City Classic.

UC Davis has now lost its last three games and the
first two games of the classic to even its overall
record at 6-6. San Jose State rebounded after a 3-2
loss to BYU yesterday and is now 7-3.

The Spartans used a three-run fifth inning and
added another in the eighth to jump ahead 6-1
heading into the ninth inning. UC Davis scored two
runs in the bottom of the ninth of an RBI by Jake
Jefferies and an error by San Jose State, but
couldn't overcome the deficit.

Bellows and Valine both drove home two runs off
just one hit to lead the Spartans offensively.
Bellows highlighted the big Spartan fifth inning with
a two-run triple to right field. John Shaffer had the
best overall day for the Spartans with three hits,
three runs scored and an RBI while reaching base
five times.

Jefferies recorded his eighth multiple hit showing of
the season in only the 12th game as he went 2-for-
5 with an RBI. He has also pushed his hitting streak
up to seven games. Kevin James drove in the other
Aggie run in the first inning off a double and Matt
Dempsey went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. In
addition, Ty Kelly got a pinch-hit single to run his
team-leading hitting streak to nine games.

San Jose State relief pitcher Christopher McNeil got
his first win of the season and Brandon Hennessey
earned the save by pitching 3.2 innings, striking out
three and not allowing an earned run. Brad McAtee
struck out four batters and gave up only three
earned runs in six innings in his first loss of the
season.

UC Davis concludes its season-long nine-game
homestand tomorrow with a 10 a.m. game against
BYU. That game is the Aggies' third in the River City
Classic and will be simulcast on KDVS 90.3 and
