JEFFERIES' SLAM LEADS AGGIES OVER UTAH, 12-4

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior catcher Jake Jefferies hit an inside-the-park
grand slam and UC Davis scored a season-high 12 runs to defeat Utah, 12-4, in a nonconference baseball game at Dobbins Stadium Friday afternoon.

The win evens the Aggies' overall record at 3-3 while the Utes start
their season at 0-4. It was also the Aggies first win at home as a
Division I team.

"We finally got some quality at bats with runners on base. It makes
everything easier when you're hitting like that," said Aggie coach Rex
Peters. "You don't see a lot of inside-the-park home runs like that, but
Jefferies runs well for a catcher. Hopefully we can continue this through
the rest of weekend."

Jefferies, who is now hitting a team-high .450 through the first six
games of the season, owned the game-high with his four RBIs. Overall, a total of six Aggies drove in runs while seven UC Davis players had at
least two hits. Senior Matt Dempsey and sophomore transfer Ty Kelly drove in two runs apiece. Kyle Mihaylo, Grant Hirneise and Ryan Scoma each drove in runs off two hits and scored multiple runs. Seniors Evan Hudson and Ryan Royster rounded out the Aggies with two hits.

Senior Eddie Gamboa recorded his second win of the season and struck out four batters while allowing only four runs in seven innings of work.
Colin McCusker relieved Gamboa in the eighth inning and struck out two batters and allowed only one hit in his two-inning appearance

Cooper Blanc led the Utes with three hits and two RBIs. Teammate Fred Ferguson drove in the other two runs for Utah. Stephen Fife gave up eight runs in 1.1 innings in the losing effort.

UC Davis put up a huge eight-run second inning to jump out to a
commanding lead. After a walk to Hirneise and a single by Scoma, Mihaylo drove Scoma home with a single up the middle to put the Aggies on the board. Following a Kelly sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and a walk to sophomore Justin Schafer, Dempsey provided another single up the middle to score two more runs. Royster singled to load the bases. Jefferies' unconventional inside-the-park home run took place in the next at bat as he looped a ball under a diving right fielder that traveled all the way to the wall. Following a double from senior Evan Hudson, Hirneise singled home the eighth run in his second at bat of the inning to cap the huge Aggie stand.

The Utes got on the board in the fourth inning behind a two-RBI double
from Blanc.

The Aggies would jump ahead 11-2 following a three-run fifth inning.
Scoma drove home the first run with a single to left field and Kelly
brought home two more off a double.

Ferguson drove in the final runs for Utah in the top of the seventh
inning with a two-run homer over the left field fence.

UC Davis' final run came in the bottom half of the seventh inning as
Kelly singled home another run to make the final score 12-4.

The two teams return to Dobbins Stadium tomorrow for a doubleheader. The first game begins at 11 a.m. with the second scheduled to follow shortly thereafter. Both games can be heard live on ucdavisaggies.com.
