Long Beach State Takes Home Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup

Irvine, Calif. – Long Beach State has reclaimed the Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup after tallying the best point average during the 2010-11 season. The victory is the third overall for the 49er program in the 13-year history of the Cup. The 49ers won three conference titles (men’s basketball, women’s tennis and men’s track and field) and placed second in five other sports. The 49ers averaged 130.7 points over the 14 conference sports in which they competed.

The Commissioner’s Cup is presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference's 16 sponsored sports championships.

Cal Poly (118.0 point average) placed second in the Cup standings for the third consecutive season. The Mustangs won the winter season and finished in third during the fall and spring seasons. The Mustangs shared the women’s basketball regular season title as well as the women’s tennis regular season crown. They also placed second in women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, and men’s basketball.

Last year’s champion, UC Santa Barbara (108.0 point-average) placed third. The Gauchos won the women’s cross country title and shared the women’s basketball regular season title. The Gauchos are eight-time winners of the Cup.

UC Davis (100.0 point-average) claimed fourth place, tying for its highest finish in the Cup standings. The Aggies won three titles of their own, coming in men’s cross country, women’s golf and men’s golf.

Rounding out the standings were UC Irvine (98.7), Pacific (93.6), Cal State Fullerton (73.6), Cal State Northridge (73.3) and UC Riverside (60.0).

To determine the champion for the Commissioner’s Cup, total points are summed and divided by the number of championships in which each institution competes. Each sport champion is also given a 20-point bonus. The Commissioner’s Cup is then awarded to the school with the highest average.
