Cal State Fullerton Wins First Commissioners Cup

Cal State Fullerton is just the fourth institution ever to win the #CommissionersCup.
2017-18 Big West Commissioner's Cup Final Release

On the back of a strong spring sports performance, Cal State Fullerton has won the Big West Commissioner’s Cup for the first time school history.

The Titans averaged 137.1 points over their seven spring sports, upping their overall average to a Cup-winning 116.8 points. CSF won spring season titles in baseball, softball and men’s track & field, while also tying for second in women’s tennis. Those results came on the heels of a division crown in men’s soccer, a pair of top three finishes in cross country and a top four finish in men’s basketball, all helping the program take the Cup for the first time. Cal State Fullerton is the first Cup champion other than Long Beach State or UC Santa Barbara since former member Pacific won the first two Cups from 1998-2000. CSF’s spring average is also the best showing in the season since LBSU put up an average of 142.5 points in the spring of 2014.

UC Davis finished the 2017-18 Commissioner’s Cup campaign in second place with an average of 114.4 points, matching its best finish in the Cup race. The Aggies’ sport seasons included dual basketball championships, a division title in men’s soccer and top four finishes in men’s cross country, women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and men’s track & field. The school also reached the semifinals of the men’s tennis tournament. UC Davis also finished in second place in 2014-15 when it recorded an average of 111.9 points, making this season it’s most successful in Cup history by point average.

The most successful programs in Commissioner’s Cup history ended up in a tie for third as Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara each tallied 110.0 points over 16 sports. The Beach won the women’s golf, women’s track & field and men’s volleyball titles in the spring, spearheading the program to an impressive 130.0 average in the season. Meanwhile the Gaucho spring saw the program claim the women’s tennis title to go along with a second place finish in women’s track & field. UCSB previously won the women’s cross country title and finished in second place in men’s soccer, men’s cross country and men’s basketball.

UC Irvine finished the year in fifth place with a 105.6-point average, bouyed in the spring by men’s golf and women’s water polo titles. Cal Poly’s 103.8 point average was sixth, giving the league six programs with 100.0-point averages for the first time in the current nine instiution membership. Seventh place went to CSUN at 75.0 points, eighth to Hawai’i at 70.0 points and UC Riverside completed the 2017-18 Commissoner’s Cup standings in ninth at 59.3.

The Big West Commissioner’s Cup, which started during the 1998-99 season, is awarded to the institution with the highest average point total following the 18 Conference sport seasons. Points are not awarded if the institution or conference does not sponsor the sport.

In determining a champion, the following round robin sports have points awarded on the basis of the final regular season standings, including a 20-point bonus for the champion. These sports are baseball, basketball, soccer, softball,  women’s tennis and indoor volleyball. In the sports of cross country, golf, men’s tennis, track & field, women’s beach volleyball and women’s water polo, the points are awarded based on finish at the Conference Championship. In the case of ties in all sports, points shall be awarded by combining points and dividing them equally among the tied teams.

A complete recap of the point system is available below.
