Fall Season Action Places Long Beach State Atop Commissioner’s Cup Standings

Irvine, Calif. – The 49ers of Long Beach State parlayed a successful fall season into an early lead in the Commissioner’s Cup race, finishing with an impressive 160.0-point average following the first segment of conference play in the 2011-12 athletic season.

LBSU, the defending Cup champion, picked up its points thanks to a Big West regular season championship in Women’s Volleyball, a second place showing in Women’s Soccer and second and third place finishes in Women’s and Men’s cross country, respectively.

UC Santa Barbara leads a crowded pack for second place, amassing an average of 116.0 points. The Gauchos point total was helped by top three finishes in Men’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball and both Cross Country squads.

UC Davis sits in third with 112.0 points, which includes their first Women’s Cross Country title. The Aggies also were aided by a third place finish in men’s soccer and tied for third in women’s soccer.

UC Irvine finds itself in fourth place with 110.0 points. The Anteaters are buoyed by a sweep of the soccer titles, the second consecutive season that UCI has accomplished that feat. Cal Poly (94.0), UC Riverside (80.0) and Cal State Northridge (78.0) occupy the next three slots, with the Mustangs aided by the Men’s Cross Country title. Cal State Fullerton (64.0) and Pacific (56.7) round out the standings after the fall.

The Big West Commissioner’s Cup, which started during the 1998-99 season, is presented at the end of the spring season to the institution with the top overall point average tallied from Big West Conference Championships. To determine the champion for the Commissioner’s Cup, total points are summed and divided by the number of championships in which each institution competes. Each sport champion is also given a 20-point bonus.
