UC Santa Barbara Reclaims Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup

Irvine, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara has reclaimed the Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup after tallying the best point average during the 2009-10 season. The victory is the eighth overall for the Gaucho program in the 12-year history of the Cup. The Gauchos won three conference titles (men’s soccer, men’s basketball and women’s cross country) and placed second in six other sports. The Gauchos averaged 115.9 points over the 17 conference sports in which they competed.

The Commissioner’s Cup is presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference's 18 sponsored sports championships.

Cal Poly (105.9 point average) placed second in the Cup standings for the second straight year. The Mustangs had a strong fall season and finished in the middle of the pack during the winter and spring seasons. The Mustangs won the men’s cross country title and the women’s soccer regular season title while placing second in women’s basketball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis.

Last year’s champion, Long Beach State (103.6 point-average) placed third. The 49ers won the women’s volleyball title and the women’s tennis regular season title and placed second in women’s golf and men’s track. The 49ers have placed in the top three in the cup standings for nine consecutive years.

UC Davis (101.1 point-average) placed fourth, its highest finish in the Cup standings. The Aggies won the most titles of any school, winning the men’s and women’s swimming titles, the women’s golf championship and the softball regular season title.

Rounding out the standings were UC Irvine (100.7), Pacific (84.6), Cal State Northridge (82.4), Cal State Fullerton (75.0) and UC Riverside (60.0).

To determine the champion for the Commissioner’s Cup, total points are summed and divided by the number of championships in which each institution competes. Each sport champion is also given a 20-point bonus. The Commissioner’s Cup is then awarded to the school with the highest average.
