The second day of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft showcased eight Big West Conference players selected, joining a quartet of student-athletes picked on day one.
The suspense for Cal State Fullerton’s J.D. Davis was over in a matter of minutes with his name being the first announced on day two, going in the third round as the 75th overall pick to the Houston Astros. He joins Titan Matt Chapman, who was the league’s top draft pick yesterday as the 25th overall pick to the Oakland A’s.
A trio of Cal Poly Mustangs followed with Nick Torres nabbed in the fourth round as the 117th choice to the San Diego Padres and Zack Zehner and Reed Reilly selected in the 7th round. Zehner went to the Toronto Blue Jays (204th) and Reilly is headed to the Boston Red Sox (224th). Today’s selections bumps the Mustang’s total to four players drafted after pitcher Matt Imhof was nabbed in yesterday’s second round by the Philadelphia Phillies as the 47th overall choice.
Connor Spencer becomes the third UC Irvine player drafted, going in the eighth round (242nd) to the New York Yankees. Teammates Taylor Sparks and Andrew Morales were selected on day one.
Andrew Rohrbach is Long Beach State’s first draftee after the Colorado Rockies scooped him up in the ninth round as the 263rd overall pick. Also going in the ninth round was UC Riverside’s Nick Vilter, who was the San Diego Padres’ choice as the 267th overall selection. UC Davis’ Steven Patterson was the final Big West student-athlete picked on day two as a 10th round (308th) selection by the Cleveland Indians.
The third and final day with rounds 11-40 of the MLB First-Year Player Draft will be announced on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. (Pacific).
