Senior Emily Hartong (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) led Hawai‘i to an upset of top-ranked Texas to earn her fifth career Big West Women's Volleyball Player of the Week honor.
The 6-2 outside hitter posted a team-high 18 kills and added seven digs with two blocks as the Rainbow Wahine won a four-set thriller over the defending national champion Longhorns. Hartong also had a service ace as UH defeated a No. 1-ranked opponent for the first time since knocking off UCLA in 2000.
Hartong, who earned her fifth career Player of the Week accolade, went on to lead her team in kills the next two matches as she ended up as the Most Outstanding Player of the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
She clubbed 14 kills with seven digs and a block in UH's straight-set triumph against UTEP. In that match, Hartong hit .387 with just two errors in 31 attempts.
Hartong delivered 30 kills in a match for the third time in her career in the Rainbow Wahine's five-set loss to unranked San Diego in Sunday's tournament finale. She added 12 digs for her first double-double of the season. Hartong also swung at an impressive .424 (30-5-49) clip and added a pair of service aces.
For the week, Hartong hit .356 (62-15-132) with averages of 5.17 kills, 2.17 digs and 0.25 service aces per game.
