Outstanding performances on day two of the NCAA Division I Track and Field West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas yielded excellent results for Big West athletes as five more advanced to next month’s national meet, bringing the conference total to seven.
Inclement weather conditions that delayed competition for three hours did not hinder the Big West’s contingent as three sprinters and two middle distance runners booked their plane tickets to Eugene, Ore., June 5-8. The five join long jumpers Ted Hooper of UC Riverside and Willie Alexander of Long Beach State, who qualified for NCAA's on Thursday.
UC Santa Barbara senior Jennifer Carey was the first to book her ticket to nationals as she clocked a 52.72 in the 400-meter dash. Carey established a personal-best while finishing third in her heat and seventh overall.
UC Davis sophomore Ashley Marshall became the program’s first female sprinter to advance to the national championships with the eighth-fastest time (11.70) in the 100-meter dash. Marshall, who advanced to the quarterfinals from Thursday’s prelims in 11.45, turned in the third-fastest mark in her heat Friday. Marshall added to a successful evening with a second-place finish in the first heat of the 200-meter prelims, ensuring her participation in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Marshall crossed in 23.79.
The fastest male sprinter in the Big West – Cal State Northridge’s Carl Horsley – set a school record for the second consecutive day. After running a 10.23 in the 100 meters Thursday, which broke the record of 10.30 that had stood since 1998, Horsley advanced to nationals in the event with a slower time of 10.48 that still was fifth-best overall.
Horsley later returned to run a blistering personal-best 20.73 in the 200-meters that bettered the school record 20.77 Joe Criner achieved 15 years ago. The performance moved Horsley into Saturday’s quarterfinals where he will attempt to reach nationals in a second event.
Wallace posted the second-fastest time in 2:04.05 to easily qualify for Eugene in the 800. She nearly nipped Samantha Murphy of Illinois (2:03.83) at the finish line. Wallace won Thursday’s prelims in 2:08.47.
The third Aggie to advance to the NCAA meet was sophomore Katie Fry. The 3,000-meter steeplechase specialist became the first woman in school history to break 10 minutes and obliterate her own school record in the process. She ran a 9:58.97 to trample her previous school-record time of 10:16.46 at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this season, finishing second in her heat and third overall.
In addition to the five national qualifiers, other Big West athletes kept their dreams alive for a spot at the NCAA meet.
Long Beach State’s Davon Wilson-Angel ran 14.28 in the 110-meter hurdles to qualify for Saturday’s quarterfinals. Emily Cooper clocked a 23.99 in the 200 for third place in her first round heat, giving the 49er another opportunity in tomorrow’s quarters.
Saturday’s action begins at 8:00 a.m. (PDT) with the continuation of the men’s hammer, which was postponed due to the rainy weather in Austin. Competition on the track begins at 4:00 p.m. (PDT) with the participation of the Cal State Northridge 4x100 women’s relay team.
