
Fueled by two top-10 performances by sophomores Eric Sugimoto and Byron Meth, the 2013 Big West Men's Golf Co-Champion Pacific Tigers carded an impressive 14-under 288 to sit in fifth place after the first day of the NCAA Regionals at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman, Wash.
Sugimoto, who is coming off medalist honors at the 2013 Big West Men's Golf Championship, blasted 7-under 65 to tie for third place. Meth finds himself knotted for eighth place with a score of 66 while SeungJae Maeng posted 1-under 71 to tie for 35th. Alex Edfort shot even-par 72 and Drew Brender rounded out the five-man team with a 75.
Pacific wasn't the only team that shined in the Evergreen State. UC Davis' Tyler Raber, who is competing as an individual, shot four straight birdies to conclude the first round of the regionals with a 5-under 67. He is currently tied for 15th.
Also participating as an individual is UC Santa Barbara's Glen Scher. Hailing from Thousand Oaks, Calif., Scher registered 9-over 79 in the first round of the Tempe Regional at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.
Day two of the three-day event takes place Friday, May 17.
With six regional sites, the low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional advance to the championship at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga., May 28-June 2.
