Smith Selected To NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships

UCI W-TEN player Kristina Smith by Brie CampbellUC Irvine senior Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) joined the field of 64 players selected to the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championships, which will be played May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill. with the University of Illinois serving as host.

Smith automatically qualified from the Big West by virtue of being ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 125.  She is currently ranked No. 88 nationally.

The 2013 Big West Player of the Year, Smith has posted an outstanding 20-3 record as the exclusive No. 1 player for the Anteaters.  She has reeled off 17 straight victories in dual singles matches, including a win over Big West Freshman of the Year and fellow first-team all-conference selection Ebba Unden in the championship match of the conference tournament.

Smith is UCI's first participant in the national singles tournament since Maureen Diaz in 2000.

Among Smith's victims this season are ranked opponents No. 118 Klara Vyskocilova of Tulane, No. 112 Kaitlin Burns of LSU and No. 98 Edyta Cieplucha of SMU.  Ranked third in school history with 75 career dual match wins, Smith also went 9-0 against Big West competition this season.  Smith was a catalyst in UCI setting school records for longest win streak (20) and highest national ranking No. 23).

All matches shall be the best of three sets.  Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches at the NCAA Singles Championship.
