Big West Competes at 2012 U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials (6/30/12)

Cal Poly graduate Sharon Day punched her ticket to the 2012 London Olympics scoring 6,343 points in the women's seven-event heptathlon competition on Saturday, June 30 at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.  This will be Day's second trip to the Olympics after qualifying in the 2008 Trials in the high jump but did not make it to the finals.

Sharon Day Earns Trip to London with Second Place Finish at Olympic Trials

Mustang standout Sharon Day placed second in the heptathlon earning her a second trip to the Olympics in her second event. Day finished the seven event, two day, competition with 6,343 points, 76 points behind winner Hyleas Fountain (6,419 points) and 155 points ahead of third place finisher Chantae McMillan.

Assistant coach for UC Davis' long distance runners, Kim Conley, punched her ticket to the 2012 London Olympics after placing third in the women's final heat of the 5,000-meter race at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. on Thursday, June 28.

Conley joins already gold medalist and Olympic Trials champion, Stephanie Brown-Trafton who finished on top in the women's discus throw.  Competition continues through Monday, July 1 with a handful of Big West representatives still looking to qualify for their spot on the Olympic Team. 

Conley Earns Historic Olympic Berth In 5,000

UC Davis volunteer assistant coach Kim Conley surged from a big deficit on the final straightaway Thursday night, leaning her way into third place at the finish line of the 5,000-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, and earning a berth to the London Games.

Cal Poly graduate Ben Bruce qualified with the second fastest time in the men's 3,000 meters steeplechase at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials on Monday in Eugene, Ore., while graduate and coach Kim Conley of UC Davis will also be advancing to the final heat in the women's 5K.

The Trials will take a two-day break Tuesday, June 26-Wednesday, June 27 with the final competitions continuing through to Monday, July 1.

Ben Bruce posted the second-fastest time of the day in a qualifying heat of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Conley Advances To Olympic Trials 5,000 Final
UC Davis assistant coach Kim Conley finished third in her heat in the 5,000-meter run on Monday evening, automatically advancing to Thursday's final at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field and moving one step closer to her goal of reaching the London Games in August.

Cal Poly graduate Stephanie Brown Trafton is the first Big West representative to claim her spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team to compete at the London Olympics in the women's discus competition.  The 2008 Bejing Olympics gold medalist will look to defend her title after taking the top mark in the women's discus final round on Sunday at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials held in Euguene, Ore.

A pair of duo's advance in both the men's and women's 800-meter race's in the semi-final round and recent Long Beach State graduate, Ben Woodruff advances to the finals in the men's javelin at the 2012 Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. on Saturday.

UC Irvine's Charles Jock and UC Santa Barbara's Ryan Martin will advance on the men's side and alumni, UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez and Cal Poly's Maggie Vessey will compete on the women's side of the 800-meter race final.
