Cross Country Season Concluded With NCAA Championship

The 2011 Cross Country season concluded today with the running of the 2011 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. The Cal Poly men's cross country team, the only Big West team selected to the championship, finished 28th, while the two Mustang women competing as individuals placed among the top 150.

Wisconsin's men lived up to their No. 1 national ranking in topping two-time defending champion Oklahoma State, 97-139, for their fifth NCAA title. On the women's side, No. 3 Georgetown came away with their first national team title, scoring the second-highest winning score in meet history (162).

Senior Daniel Gonia once again paced the Mustangs with a 75th place finish. He covered the 10k course in a time of 30:48. David Cardona crossed the line in 94th with a time of 30:58 and was followed by Chris Frias with a time of 31:48 (162nd). Michael Johnson was 170th with a time of 31:53 and Ryan Cosens, the last scoring Mustang, clocked a time of 32:03 for 179th place. Senior Bradon Shirck finished 182nd with a time of 32:05 with sophomore Sean Davidson crossing the line in 191st and a time of 32:13.

In the women's race, senior Leanne Fogg finished 105th and covered the 6k course in a time of 21:04. True freshman Meghan Breadmore finished 146th and a time of 21:22.

Also running as individuals were UC Riverside's Chad Hall and UC Davis' Jonathon Peterson. Hall, the highest Big West finisher at this year's event, ran a time of 30:17.8 to place 44th. This was the second straight year the Big Bear, Calif., native received an invitation to the championship. Also participating in his second consecutive NCAA Championship, Peterson concluded his final season as an Aggie placing 71st with a time of 30:34.5.
