The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recognized 450 athletes today that earned all-region awards for cross country in Division I following this weekends NCAA Regional Championships. Athletes of member schools that finished in the top 25 individually at one of the nine regional sites earned the honor.
Earning the distinction from the Big West Conference were Cal Poly's Daniel Gonia, David Cardona, Leanne Fogg and Meghan Breadmore; Long Beach State's Heath Reedy and Rosa Del Toro; UC Davis' Jonathan Peterson and UC Riverside's Chad Hall.
At the NCAA regional meet, Hall was the fastest Big West runner, posting a 10K time of 29:28, a career-best. Gonia paced the championship-qualifying Mustangs squad with his ninth place finish, covering the course in a time of 29:28. His teammate, Cardona, clocked in a time of 29:56 to claim the 20th slot. Peterson finished 10th (29:30) and Reedy grabbed 18th after crossing the finish line in 29:52.
On the women's side, the Cal Poly duo finished 16th and 17th with Fogg finishing two seconds ahead of Breadmore in the 6K with a time of 20:45. Del Toro wasn't far behind, posting the 19th-best time of the day at 20:49.
The Mustang quartet, along with Peterson and Hall, are slated to compete in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships Monday, Nov. 21. This year's meet is hosted by Indiana State at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind. The men's race will begin at approximately 12:08 p.m. (ET) and will be followed by the women's race at approximately 12:58 p.m. (ET).
