Long Beach State's Randi Hicks had a successful time at NCAA Track & Field Championships Thursday as the senior gained first team All-America honors for her efforts in the javelin. Hicks and other Big West athletes are competing at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Hicks' toss of 161-02 (49.13m) on her first toss of the afternoon gained her a spot in the event final. From there, Hicks did not improve on the mark, but it was good to land her in eighth place for the coveted All-America spot. This marks the second consecutive season that Hicks came away with top national honors following the javelin championship.
Hicks' teammate Colin Dunbar was the only other Big West athlete in competition in a field event as he competed in the men's hammer. Dunbar had a top effort of 212-03 (64.71m), but he was not able to gain entry to the event final. He finished 11th overall and claimed second team All-America status.
Both multi-event representatives were in action Thursday as well, but weather played a factor in their competitions.
Long Beach State's Nicholas Armstrong remains in 17th place in the decathlon with 6,178 points, but the competiton was halted during the javelin due to the weather conditions. Armstrong and the 23 other athletes will complete the javelin and the 1500 run at some point Friday morning.
Cal State Northridge's Sherrina Lofton beat the weather and completed an excellent first day in the heptathlon with 3,339 points, good for sixth place in the 24-athlete field.
