Senior golfer Geoff Gonzalez battled through another nine-over-par round on the second day of competition Wednesday in the NCAA Division I National Championship at Karsten Creek.

Gonzalez (Diablo, CA/Monte Vista HS) birdied three of his final five holes to finish with his second successive 81 and an 18-over-par 162 total, tied for 141st place with three other golfers in the 156-player field.

Also competing as an individual is UC Davis freshman Matt Hansen, who withdrew from the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship due to illness. Hansen's status for Thursday's final round of competition has not been determined.

The freshman opened the 54-hole tournament with a 1-over 73 after carding three birdies on his front nine and shooting par on all nine holes of his back nine. He was among 13 players tied for 34th place.

LSU's John Peterson is the individual leader at five-under 139 (74-65). His 65 is the competitive course record at Karsten Creek. James White of Georgia Tech is second individually after shooting 67-73 for a 140 total.

Following Thursday's round, the field of 30 teams will be cut to eight for match play Friday through Sunday.
