UC Davis freshman Matt Hansen, who is currently competing at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, has been named to the Div. I PING All-West Region team, it was announced Tuesday.
Hansen receives the honor after winning the NCAA Southwest Regional by two strokes two weeks ago in Tucson, Ariz. and becoming UC Davis' first men's golf representative at the NCAA Championship.
The Los Osos, Calif. native has made an immediate and consistent impact in his first year with the Aggies. He was UC Davis' top finisher at the season-opening Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational, tying for tenth overall and earning Big West Golfer of the Month accolades for September.
He concluded his debut season with five top-20 finishes, placing 18th overall at the Big West Men's Golf Championship. He was named Freshman of the Year, becoming the first Aggie men's golfer to receive the award, and was also selected to the second team.
Hansen is one of six individual players competing at the national championship at the 7,416-yard, par 72 Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater.
He shot a 1-over 73, tying for 34th place, after the first round of competition on Tuesday. He opened with a birdie on his first hole of the day and shot par on all nine holes of his back nine.
Hansen continues action at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday. The 54-hole tournament concludes Thursday.
