After a hot, humid and windy first round of the 2011 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., Big West Freshman of the Year Matt Hansen, playing as an individual, is tied for 34th after firing a one-over 73.

Hansen, UC Davis' first representative at the men's golf finals in its four-year Division I era, is one of six individual players competing at the national championship. The Los Osos, Calif., native advanced to the championship after claiming medalist honors at the NCAA Southwest Regional in Tucson, Ariz.

Joining Hasen in the championship is Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez, who earned a berth into the finals after finishing as the top individual on a non-advancing team at the NCAA Central Regional in Boulder, Colo. The Senior Mustang struggled in round one, shooting a nine-over 81. He is currently tied for 134th.

Georgia Tech's James White carded a 5-under 67 to lead the 154-person field. He is followed by Cameron Peck from Texas A&M at 4-under and Augusta State's Patrick Reed and San Diego State's J.J. Spaun at 3-under par 69.

The 54-hole event continues through Thursday, followed by team competition Friday through Sunday.
