Day one of the NCAA West Regional saw Long Beach State's Randi Hicks claim a trip to nationals to highlight the Big West competitors in action.

Hicks qualified by finishing 11th in the javelin with an effort of 162-03 (49.45m) on her first toss of the day. This marks her second consecutive trip to the NCAA meet where she will attempt to duplicate her All-American finish from a year ago.

Hicks was the lone field athlete to advance to nationals, but several track athletes advanced to the finals of their respective events.

In the men's 400 hurdles, the UC Davis duo of Alex Wilright (51.04) and Thomas Phillips (51.17) finished eighth and tenth, respectively, to qualify for the finals.

Another Aggie is headed to the final in a running event as Jonathan Sees finished the 1500 in 3:47.08, good for 12th in the field.

Cal State Fullerton's Ciara Short had arguably the best day of the Big West track event competitors as she won her heat in the 400 and posted the top qualifying time of 53.11.

UC Santa Barbara's Justine Diaz found her way into the 800 women's final as she posted the 20th-best time in 2:07.99. Her time was third in her heat.

The top two 800 runners in the country, UC Irvine's Charles Jock and UC Santa Barbara's Ryan Martin, qualified for the final as Jock finished sixth-best in 1:48.96, while Martin was 18th overall in 1:50.33.
