Big West representatives Chris Kearney of UC Irvine, and Andre Dome and Alexander Sonesson of Cal Poly learned their first round opponents in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, which begin today and run through May 30 at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The host school is Stanford.
Kearney, the 2011 Big West Player of the Year, will battle Mississippi's Marcel Thiemann in the first round at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. With a win, Kearney would play either No. 7 seed Eric Quigley of Kentucky or UNLV's Mehdi Bouras in Thursday's second round action.
Thiemann is ranked No. 36 in the Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, while Kearney is 42nd. The two played against each other on May 13 in the first round of the NCAA team competition at No. 1 singles. The match was suspended with Kearney leading Thiemann 6-3, 4-5.
Dome and Sonesson make their NCAA doubles debut on Thursday against Jean Andersen and Ed Corrie of Texas. A win would pit the Mustang duo against either Duke's Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha or Christoph Thiemann and Marcel Thiemann of Mississippi on Friday.
Dome and Sonesson are ranked No. 50 nationally, while their first round counterparts from Texas are No. 9. The first team all-conference pair own a 12-5 record at the No. 1 doubles position this season.
