UC Irvine and Cal Poly were eliminated in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships on Friday. The Anteaters lost 4-1 to Mississippi while the Mustangs fell 4-0 to Washington.

Anteaters Lose 4-1 To Ole Miss In NCAA First Round
Ole Miss was too much for UC Irvine in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament as the UC Irvine men’s tennis season came to a close with a 4-1 loss to the Rebels at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Mississippi (13-9) advances to Saturday’s second round against the winner of UCLA and Binghampton.
Ole Miss won the first two doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead. In a match featuring ranked teams, No. 10 Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann beat #59 Chris Kearney and Stephen Stege, 8-2. The duo of Tucker Vorster and Jonas Lutjen clinched the doubles point for the Rebels over Sam Gould and Steven Henderson, 8-4. Play ended in No. 3 doubles with Ole Miss leading UCI 7-6.
Chris Thiemann put the Rebels up 2-0 as he cruised to a straight-set victory over Cheung 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 4 position. The ‘Eaters earned their first point of the match when Fabian Matthews beat Lutjen 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Vorster gave his team the 3-1 lead with a straight-set win over Gould 7-5, 6-1 followed by Johan Backstrom who clinched the match for the Rebels over Shan Sondhu 6-4, 6-3.
The Anteaters end their team season with a 19-8 overall record. Chris Kearney will be competing in the NCAA Individual Championships starting May 25 in Stanford, Calif.

Cal Poly Shut Down by Washington, 4-0
The Cal Poly men’s tennis team lost in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championship to the University of Washington, 4-0, on Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on the Stanford Campus.
With the loss Cal Poly concludes the 2011 season with a 14-7 overall record while Washington improves to 18-8 and will face the winner of Stanford and Army.
The match opened with Washington taking the doubles point winning two of the three matches.
Jeeve Neduchezhiyan and Kyle McMorrow, ranked 28th in the nation, defeated the No. 49 team of Andre Dome and Alexander Sonesson, 8-6.
Washington secured the doubles point with an 8-5 win on the third court when Marton Bots and Daniel Schmidt defeated Brian McPhee and Drew Jacobs.
Marco Comuzzo and Jordan Bridge were up 6-5 on the second court over Martin Kildahl and Tobi Obenaus when the point was decided.
Washington won its second point on the second court in singles competition when the 49th-ranked singles player, McMorrow defeated Sonesson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
The second single point came on the third court when the 117th ranked player, Kildahl, defeated McPhee, 6-4, 6-2.
The Huskies wrapped up the match on the fifth court when Bots defeated Comuzzo, 6-4, 7-6.
The other three singles matches went unfinished.
Playing on the fourth court Bridge was up 4-2 in the second set after falling 6-4 in the opener to Obenaus. Sebastian Bell was also up 4-3 in the second after dropping the first 7-6 in a tiebreaker to Max Manthou.
Dome was tied 4-4 in the second to the No. 66th player Neduchezhiyan after dropping the first set 6-4.
The doubles team of Dome and Sonesson will return to the Taube Family Tennis Stadium for the doubles championship May 19-30.
