Saturday saw the end of the NCAA Track & Field West Regional meet, a day that gave Big West representatives their final chance to move on to the NCAA Championships in early June.
In the field events, two Big West athletes advanced to the NCAA Championships after the completion of the high jump. Cal Poly's Whitney Sisler and UC Santa Barbara's Jane Doolittle each cleared 1.81 meters (5-11.25) on the bar to tie for seventh and book trips to Eugene, Ore., for the national meet.
In the final day of the track events, several Big West athletes punched their tickets to Eugene to compete against the nation's best.
Cal State Northridge's 4x100 relay contingent moved on to the NCAA Championships after posting the 10th-best time in the event. The Matadors put up a 39.94, the top time of any team that did not finish in the top three of its heat.
In the individual events, a familiar suspect was the first to move on to the national championships as UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez advanced in the 1500 meter run. She won her heat in 4:18.20, ranking her second in the field.
The next athlete to advance to the NCAA Championships came after the 110 hurdles as Polly Gnepa of UC Davis claimed a spot in Track Town USA. Gnepa was fourth in his heat at 13.77, but that time was tops among the competitors who didn't finish in the top three of their respective heats.
Finally another relay squad gained entry into the NCAA meet as the Cal State Northridge 4x400 squad claimed a spot in Eugene. CSUN put up an effort of 3:37.29, qualifying for the national championships with the 12th-best time among all the relay squads.
With the West Regional Championships completed, the NCAA meet will be the focus of the collegiate track & field world June 9-12. Hayward Track on the campus of the University of Oregon will hold the national meet, the final NCAA event of the 2010 outdoor season.
