Cal Poly seniors Brittany Blalock and Suzie Matzenauer put up a valiant fight, but fell in the a first round match of the NCAA Doubles Championships Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Set scores were 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-5 in favor of Baylor senior Csilla Borsanyi and Lenka Broosova. The pair is ranked No. 11 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. They move on to face Clemson's Josipa Bek and Ina Hadziselimovic in a second round match on Friday.
After falling in a first set that featured just one service break, Blalock and Matzenauer fought back in the second frame. Trailing 5-4 and again at 6-5, the Cal Poly tandem battled to tie the score 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. The Mustangs dominated the tiebreaker, winning the last five points and forcing a third and deciding set.
Blalock and Matzenauer, the nation's 48th-ranked team by the ITA, appeared to have the third set well in hand. They led 5-2 before Baylor held serve to trim the deficit to two. Borsanyi and Broosova then broke Cal Poly's serve twice en route to an improbable 7-5 comeback.
It was just Blalock and Matzenauer's fourth loss in 21 spring matches. Blalock completed her second trip the NCAA Doubles Championship after participating with Steffi Wong at the 2008 event.
