UCSB's Smith Leads Big West Finishers at NCAA Cross Country Championships

The final competition of the NCAA cross country season was completed today as UC Santa Barbara's Scott Smith led a trio of Big West finishers at the NCAA Championships. The races were hosted by Indiana State University and held at LaVern Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Smith completed the 10K course in 30:29.1, good for 50th place in a field of 250 competitors. Cal Poly's Joe Gatel, a senior and the 2009 Big West Athlete of the Year, was also a participant in the 10K men's race, finishing the course in 31:03.2 for 110th place.

The lone women's runner from the Big West was Crystal Reed of UC Santa Barbara. Reed crossed the finish line in the 8K women's race in 21:49.8, wrapping up her junior campaign with a 168th place finish.
