Women's Soccer Weekly Release No. 10

Cal Poly stands atop the Big West women's soccer standings with a 5-1-0 record and 15 points.

10/19/2009

Cal Poly looks to take another step toward capturing the Big West women's soccer regular season title, traveling to Pacific for a key match this weekend.  UC Santa Barbara trails the Mustangs by three points in the standings, but plays at UC Davis and Pacific this week and could engineer a tie for first with two wins.

NOTEWORTHY

Keep An Eye On

Kailyn Kugler, UC Santa Barbara
Kugler has been a red hot source of offense for UC Santa Barbara.  She has posted six goals and two assists in the last five games.  The Gauchos are 4-1-0 during that span.  In the previous 11 contests, Kugler had scored just two goals.  Kugler is tied for second in the Big West with eight goals.  Her 20 points on the season puts her all alone in second on the league leaderboard.

Four Of Top Five Wins Leaders Current Coaches
Longevity and success have permitted current Big West women’s soccer coaches to occupy four of the top five spots on the all-time victories list.  Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier leads the group with 159 victories. Pacific’s Keith Coleman is second overall with 135 wins and UC Santa Barbara’s Paul Stumpf is third on the list with 106.  Veronica O’Brien, with 81 victories at UC Riverside, sits in fifth.  The Big West began sponsoring women’s soccer in 1996.  The four coaches have a combined 44 years of head coaching experience in the Big West.

Road Warriors
Cal State Northridge set a program record in winning their third straight game by shutout, and more impressively, doing it on the road.  The Matadors succeeded in beating UC Davis, UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton by identical 1-0 scores to finish off a four-match roadtrip 3-1-0 and put themselves in prime position for a spot in the four-team Big West Tournament.  They also entered the discussion as a potential threat to win the regular season crown.

And A Freshman Shall Lead Them
The recent surge by Cal State Northridge came at a time when a casual observer may have pronounced the team’s hopes for a successful season - well, a bit wounded.  That was the case literally at the key goalkeeper position.  On Oct. 2, in a 3-2 win against Cal Poly, the Matadors lost their top two goalkeepers in Kellie Drenner and Leah Elliott to injury.  CSUN lost its next two games to UC Santa Barbara and Pacific with third stringer Haley Hawes in goal.  That prompted the coaching staff to activate then-redshirt Cynthia Jacobo and install her into the starter’s role.  Jacobo has responded beautifully with three consecutive shutouts to her credit.

Perfect Ten
Both Cal Poly and UC Irvine hit the 10-win plateau last week to become the first Big West schools to do so this season.  The Mustangs actually ended the week with 11 wins after toppling UC Davis and Long Beach State at home.  Cal Poly has won nine of its last 10 matches and eight of those wins have been by shutout.  Cal Poly has outscored the opposition 16-5 in the last 10 games.  CP has now won at least 10 games for the seventh time in the  last eight seasons.  UCI defeated UC Riverside last week to reach 10 wins, marking the second time in the last three seasons the Anteaters have accomplished the feat.

Working Overtime
With Friday’s 1-1 draw against UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton earned its fourth tie of the season to set a school record.  The Titans broke the previous mark of three times set in 1994.  CSF has had difficultly finding the back of the net, scoring just three times in the last eight games and producing all of eight goals for the season.  Despite the lack of production, the defense has held up enough to force five overtime games.

Ives Breaks Through
The scoring drought for UC Santa Barbara senior forward Genelle Ives finally ended on Friday against Long Beach State, and that couldn’t have happened at a better time.  The 2008 Big West Offensive Player of the Year had been held without a point through the first 10 matches she had played in this season.  But Ives stepped up to provide the game-tying goal and assisted on the game-winning strike in the 3-2 win against the 49ers.  The assist was the 18th of her career and moved her into a tie for ninth all-time in the Big West record book.

Big Week For Pacific
Pacific, currently in fifth place in the standings with a 3-1-0 record and nine points, faces a big challenge with the likes of first place Cal Poly and second place UC Santa Barbara visiting Stagg Stadium this week.  The Tigers would put themselves in great position to win the league title with a pair of wins.  They also could endanger their hopes of making the Big West Tournament without picking up any points this week.

deSeriere Ninth On Big West Shutout Chart
UC Irvine junior goalkeeper Danielle deSeriere is tied for ninth in the Big West record book with 19 career shutouts.  She is gearing for career shutout No. 20 when the Anteaters travel to Cal State Northridge on Sunday.
