Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell announced the 2010 Big West basketball television schedule, featuring 21 games on the ESPN family of networks and Fox Sports Net.
The package is highlighted with five nationally televised men's basketball regular season conference games on ESPN2 and ESPNU, with an additional eight regionally televised regular season games on FSN PRIME TICKET and FSN WEST. The Big West is in the second year of a five-year agreement with ESPN.
Four additional national broadcasts will appear on the package. Long Beach State will play three times on the ESPN family of networks in the 76 CLASSIC, the annual eight team Thanksgiving men's basketball tournament hosted by the Big West at the Anaheim Convention Center. The 49ers battle West Virginia on Thanksgiving Day on ESPNU. Cal State Fullerton travels to UCLA on Monday, November 16 as part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, which features 24 consecutive hours of live college basketball programming. The Titans and Bruins commence the college hoops extravaganza with a 9:00 p.m. PT (12:00 a.m. ET) tip-off.
Additionally, the Big West package will showcase four live broadcasts at the 2010 Big West Basketball Tournament in March at the Anaheim Convention Center. Two men's semifinal games on Friday, March 12 will be aired on ESPNU at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. (PT). The men's championship game on Saturday, March 13 will be shown on ESPN2 at a time to be determined. The Big West women's championship game will appear on Fox for the 13th consecutive year. FSN PRIME TICKET carries live action at 1:00 p.m. (PT) on March 13.
The Big West package potentially could grow in exposures with the eighth annual ESPN sponsored
BracketBusters event.
BracketBusters is a two-day men's basketball showcase pitting NCAA Tournament hopefuls from 14 NCAA Division I conferences against one another. Twenty-two schools will be selected from a pool of 98 teams to compete in 11 televised games on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. The 11
BracketBusters matchups will be announced on February 1, while game time and network assignments will be announced on February 8.
“We are pleased to continue strong partnerships with ESPN and Fox as this season's schedule represents a terrific opportunity for national and regional exposure,” said Farrell. “The guaranteed 21 television appearances in the Big West package is a great vehicle for the conference to promote its basketball programs.”
All nine Big West schools will appear at least once in the television package and games will take place from at least seven different campus sites.
The conference package tips off on Friday, January 8 when UC Davis travels to UC Santa Barbara for an 8:00 p.m. encounter on ESPNU. On Saturday, January 9, Cal State Fullerton goes to UC Riverside for an FSN WEST game to begin the Big West's portion of the package on that platform. One ESPN2 “Wild Card” game will be selected from a pool of conference matchups on Saturday, January 30. The top two teams in last season's final conference standings - champion Cal State Northridge and runner-up Long Beach State - will tip-off at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, February 6 on FSN WEST.
