After a lengthy delay due to severe weather in the area, Big West athletes resumed their push for national recognition in their respective events at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The national meet is being held at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
Cal Poly's Jasmine Pickett was one of the athletes to move on to a final as the sophomore seeks All-America status in the triple jump. Pickett recorded a PR effort of 43-4.25 to advance to Saturday’s penultimate round, finishing fourth in her flight and seventh overall.
Cal State Fullerton had its final athlete in competition Friday in Garrett Myers, but he could not advance to the finals of the triple jump. He finished in 19th overall with an effort of 51-0.
Cal State Northridge had Sherrina Lofton as its final competitor Friday as she finished up the heptathlon. Lofton wrapped up the competition with 4,531 points, good for 22nd place among the field.
UC Davis had its run at the NCAA Championships come to an end Friday as Polly Gnepa could not advance to the finals of the 110 hurdles. He ran his race in 14.14, finishing ninth in his heat and 18th overall.
UC Irvine's Lauren Collins competed in the finals of the high jump Friday, but narrowly missed out on All-America honors with a ninth place finish. Collins cleared the bar at 5-10.75, but was unable to clear the bar at 6-0 to move up in the standings.
