The first day of the draft witnessed a pair of pitchers picked in the third round - UC Santa Barbara's Joe Gardner (Fremont, Calif./Ohlone College) and UC Riverside's Joe Kelly (Corona, Calif./Corona HS).

UC Riverside led all Big West schools with seven selections, six of which stemmed from a Highlander pitching staff that ranks 18th in the country. Leading the way was Kelly, who was taken in the third round by the St. Louis Cardinals, followed by Paul Applebee (10th-Washignton) and Matthew Montgomery (10th-Florida).

UC Santa Barbara was second among Big West schools with six draftees, including the league's top pick in right-handed pitcher Gardner, who went in the third round (94th overall) to the Cleveland Indians. Ryan Cavan (San Francisco) and Matt Valaika (Cincinnati) were selected in the 16th and 20th, respectively.

Posting the third most draft selections in the conference were Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton with five draftees apiece. Adam Buschini was the highest representative for the Mustangs after being picked by Philadelphia in the fourth round and Josh Fellhauer led the Titans with a seventh-round selection by Cincinnati.

The UC Irvine Anteaters, Long Beach State 49ers and Cal State Northridge Matadors had three selections apiece, while UC Davis rounded out the draft with two picks.
