Cal Poly's Anna Cahn, along with four other Big West players, is now eligible for All-America honors after being selected to an NFCA All-Region team.

5/17/2009

The awards keep coming for Big West softball players as the Cal Poly duo of Anna Cahn and Krysten Cary, UC Santa Barbara's Christine Ramos and Krista Cobb and Long Beach State's Jennifer Griffin were named first team NFCA All-Region choices.

Cahn, Cary and Griffin landed spots on the All-West Region team, while Ramos and Cobb were both placed on the All-Pacific Region list. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration. A change this year is the announcement of just one team per region (First Team), although the team has the same number of members of the previous year's first and second teams combined. The change gives the regional representatives more leeway in presenting candidates for All-America selection.

Cahn, who was selected to the team as a utility player/pitcher, had one of the finest all-around seasons in Mustang and league history. The first team All-Big West selection was the league’s most dominant pitcher, leading the conference in wins (27) and innings pitched (252.2), while ranking third in ERA (1.80), fourth in opponents' batting average (.226) and second in strikeouts (160). The sophomore’s efforts in the circle culminated in Big West Pitcher of the Year accolades. In the batters box, Cahn ranked second in the Big West in RBI (41), while also ranking sixth in batting average (.338), third in on-base percentage (.443), tied for eighth in hits (53) and second in walks (30).

Cary had a breakout year in her third year in the Cal Poly program, garnering first team All-Big West honors in the process. An All-Region selection as a first baseman, she led the league in homers (14), RBI (42) and slugging percentage and was named Big West Player of the Week on a pair of occasions. Cary also paced the Mustangs with 10 multi-RBI games and was a slick fielder as she committed just three errors in 532 chances, good for a .994 fielding percentage.

Griffin had a tremendous season at the plate and in the field as she claimed All-Region honors as a third baseman following first team All-Big West honors. The senior was the 49ers’ top threat in the batters box this season, batting .314 and ranking third in RBI (40), tied for second in runs (35), while leading the conference in doubles (18), walks (50) and on base percentage (.483). Griffin was very consistent during conference play as she batted .320 with 10 doubles, 13 RBI, 25 walks and four stolen bases. She also is among the top players in the NCAA (as of May 10) in several categories as she ranks 17th in doubles per game (0.32) and fifth in walks per game (0.91). In addition to her bat and plate discipline, Griffin also committed just four errors in 137 chances at third base.

Ramos has been considered one of the top leadoff hitters in the Big West and the country and her senior season did nothing to dispel that notion. The native of Long Beach, Calif., led the Big West and set career-highs in hitting (.417) and base hits (75). Her batting average ranks 32nd in the NCAA and she is also one of the nation’s toughest strikeout victims as she only goes down on strikes .044 percent of the time, 21st on the national leaderboard (as of May 10). Ramos also showed she's a threat on the basepaths with a league-leading 16 steals, while also adding 31 runs scored and 19 RBI. On the Big West career leaderboard, Ramos broke into the top 10 career hits list this season and finishes sixth with 258 base hits, while also finishing 10th in career batting with a .364 clip. Ramos is the Gauchos' second straight Field Player of the Year and the third straight UCSB player to claim one of the major awards.

Cobb, a native of West Hills, Calif., had one of the finest seasons by a pitcher in UCSB history in just her first year on campus. She tied for third on the league leaderboard in wins (18), ninth in innings pitched (148.2), sixth in ERA (1.93) and strikeouts (115) and is tops in opponents' batting average (.204). Cobb also tied the UCSB single-season wins mark, set a new standard for freshman pitchers with her victory total and shut out nine foes this year, four of them coming in conference action.
