UC Santa Barbara Men, Long Beach State Women Ousted From NCAA Tennis Championships


UC Santa Barbara dropped a 4-0 contest to USC in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship.


Long Beach State lost 4-0 to No. 25 LSU in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.

USC Eliminates UCSB, 4-0, in First Round of NCAA Tournament


The No. 4 seed UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team was outmatched against No. 1 seed USC Friday afternoon at the Marks Tennis Center in Los Angeles, losing 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The loss ends the Gauchos' season at 11-14 overall and marks the second time in the last three years they have been eliminated by the Trojans in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The Trojans started hot in doubles play, taking down the Gauchos at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. USC's Robert Farah and Steve Johnson downed Alex Konigsfeldt and Josh Finkelstein, 8-1 while Abdullah Magdas and Daniel Nguyen held off Scott Hohenstein and Evan Jurgensen, 8-6.

With a 1-0 lead, the Trojans never looked back, notching three singles victories. Max Taylor was first to drop his match at the No. 4 position, falling to Matt Kecki, 6-1, 6-2. On court three, USC's Magdas came away with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Scott Hohenstein to give the Trojans a 3-0 advantage. USC clinched the sweep at the No. 5 slot when Nguyen defeated Taylor Chavez Goggin, 6-1, 6-3.

Konigsfeldt, Finkelstein and Mathieu Forget's matches were all suspended due to an early knockout victory by USC.

Long Beach State Falls To No. 25 LSU In The NCAA Tournament


Long Beach State dropped a close doubles point, and then fell in three singles matches in a 4-0 loss to No. 25 LSU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The No. 50 49ers closed the year out with an 18-8 record.

The 49ers were defeated in No. 1 doubles by No. 17 Falcon/Hedburg 8-0, but Rachel Manasse and Anais Dallara rallied from a 5-2 deficit to even doubles with an 8-6 win. Hannah Grady and Julie Luzar, competing together for the first time in doubles, went the distance with Kantor/Spencer, heading to a tiebreaker before falling 8-6.

In singles, No. 13 Megan Falcon defeated Grady in her final match, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and LSU clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 and a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6. Rachel Manasse had forced Mykala Hedberg to a third set at No. 2 singles when the match was suspended.

Long Beach State finishes the 2008-09 season with an 18-8 record, having won the team's sixth straight Big West title and recording a perfect 11-0 record in Big West matches including the conference tournament.

Senior Hannah Grady earned her fourth Big West Player of the Year award, while six of the seven team members were honored with All-Big West honors in either doubles or singles.
