Cal Poly's Sharon Day is headed to Beijing. Day, who graduated from Cal Poly this spring, qualified for the Olympic Games by finishing third in the high jump at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Friday, July 4.
Winning the event was Chaunte Howard at 6-5 1/2, followed by Amy Acuff with a mark of 6-4. Day and Deidre Mullen both cleared 6-3 1/4, but Day was awarded third place by virtue of fewer misses. Day cleared 6-3 1/4 on her second attempt while Mullen cleared the height on her third and final try.
Day completed her incredible collegiate career this spring by earning her seventh NCAA All-America certificate with a second-place finish at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She established a personal best and met the Olympic "A" qualifying standard by clearing 6 feet, 4 3/4 inches while winning the Big West Conference high jump title in May at Cal State Northridge. She was seeded fourth headed into the U.S. Olympic Trials.
