Cal Poly senior Sharon Day wrapped up her illustrious college career with a second place showing in the high jump at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday. The Championships are being held at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Despite the extreme flooding and voluntary evacuation order for most of downtown Des Moines, the Championships went on as scheduled. Day posted a mark of 1.86 meters, which was matched by two other competitors, but lost out on the national championship due to faulting more times than the eventual champion. Desirae Gonder of Cal State Northridge also joined Day as an All-America in the event as she finished fourth with a mark of 1.83 meters.
In the only other field event involving Big West athletes, Dashalle Andrews of Cal State Northridge and Garrett Myers of Cal State Fullerton did not post a mark in the triple jump as both faulted on their attempts.
Danielle Domenichelli of UC Santa Barbara was the lone conference competitor in a track event Friday as she competed in the finals of the 5000 meter run. Domenichelli finished 11th with a time of 16:27.98.
