UC Davis Wins Three-Team Playoff To Advance To NCAA Championship

UC Davis outdueled Stanford and Ohio State in a three-team playoff to earn the eighth and final bid out of the NCAA Women's Golf West Regional on the final day of the 54-hole tournament at Lincoln Hills Golf Club on Saturday.

The Aggies will join 23 other teams at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. Teams will play 72 holes, 18 each day, from May 20-23. UCD was the only unranked team to advance from the NCAA West Regional. The Aggies beat out seven other ranked squads in the tournament.

UC Davis finished 54 holes of the West Regional at 28-over par 892 with Stanford and Ohio State. The playoff consisted of each team playing the first five holes of the course, with one player from each team stationed at one of the holes. The team will the lowest aggregate score won the playoff.

The Aggies finished the five-hole playoff at one shot under par, while the Cardinal and Buckeyes each posted 1-over totals.

Senior Sydney Roughton led the Aggies in a tie for 13th place overall with a 2-over par 218. Her 71 in the final round was her best of the tournament. Freshman Alice Kim shot a 6-over 222 to tie for 30th place. Junior Bryana Gregory and freshman Chelsea Stelzmiller both tied for 69th place with 13-over par 229 scores.

After a first round 300 on Thursday, the Aggies pieced together back-to-back rounds of 296 to vault up the leaderboard. They were tied for 15th after 18 holes and one stroke out of eighth place through 36 holes.

Second-ranked Southern California won the regional with a score of 9-under par 855. No. 4-ranked Arizona State was second at 6-over 870. UNLV (879) and Arizona (880) finished third and fourth, respectively. Oklahoma State, Arkansas and Tulsa also advanced out of the regional along with UC Davis.

UC Irvine also represented the Big West in the West Regional and placed 14th as a team with a 54-hole total of 40-over 904. Senior Selanee Henderson led the Anteaters individually with a 4-over par 220.
