Cal Poly's Day, LBSU's Richardson Claim Big West Track & Field Multi Championships

After holding the lead following the first day of competition, Long Beach State's Chris Richardson and Cal Poly's Sharon Day held on to their positions after day 2 of the Big West Multi Championships, netting them the decathlon and heptathlon individual crowns, respectively. The Multi's wrapped up the first weekend of the Big West Track & Field Championships being held at Matador Track on the campus of Cal State Northridge.

Richardson finished with 7,461 points to win the decathlon for the second time in three years. Robert Robinson of Cal State Northridge had 7,020 points to finish in second place, while Collin Cram of Long Beach State had an excellent final day to finish in the third position with 6,739 points.

Richardson took home the crown after finishing second in the 110 hurdles (15.32), first in the discus (42.97), fifth in the pole vault, (4.40m), first in the javelin (59.14m) and eighth in the 1500 (5:14.06). He blew past his previous championship total of 7,194 in 2006 and won the multi championship by over 400 points.

Day took home the gold this season with 5,642 points after finishing in second place a year ago. She outlasted the Cal State Northridge duo of Desirae Gonder (5,203) and Shelese Ruffin (5,032) for the individual crown.

Two's were wild for Day in her second day of action as she finished second in the the long jump (5.73m), javelin (37.33m) and the 800 (2:18.77).

The Big West Track & Field Championships will continue Friday, May 16 as the conference clubs reconvene in Northridge for the remainder of the track & field events. It will be the third of the four-day conference track meet.
