A pair of familar faces sit atop the the leaderboards after the first day of the Big West Track & Field Multi Championships as Chris Richardson of Long Beach State and Sharon Day of Cal Poly lead the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively. The Multi Championships are the first leg of the 2008 Big West Track & Field Championships, which are being held at Matador Track on the campus of Cal State Northridge.
Richardson, who redshirted last season, finished the first day with 3,988 points, while Cal State Northridge's Robert Robinson (3,734) and Cal Poly's Corbin Duer (3,545) rounded out the top three. Richardson finished the day ahead of the field after finishing tied for third in the 100 (11.32), first in the long jump (7.28m) and shot put (15.40m) and third in the high jump (1.95m) and 400 (51.57).
Day, who finished second in the heptathlon a year ago, ended her first session with 3,418 points, while Desirae Gonder of Cal State Northridge (3,112) and fellow Matador Shelese Ruffin (2,958) wrapped up the top three after day one. Day finished second in the 100 hurdles (14.57), first in the high jump (1.83), second in the shot put (11.43m) and third in the 200 (25.07) on the way to the top of the leaderboard after the first round of events.
The senior duo will try to bring home the titles and early points for their respective schools tomorrow as the Multi Championships wrap up with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault and javelin for the men and the long jump, javelin and 800 for the women. The decathlon events are slated to begin at 11:00 a.m., while the heptathlon kicks off an hour later.
