Top Two Seeds Long Beach State, UC Irvine To Meet In Women's Finals

For the eighth straight year, Long Beach State has reached the finals of the Big West Women's Tennis Championship.  The top-seeded 49ers earned a 4-0 semifinal win against No. 5 seed UC Santa Barbara at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday.

LBSU attempts to win its fifth straight championship, and sixth in the last seven years, on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. versus No. 2 seed UC Irvine.  This will be the fourth time the 49ers and Anteaters have tangled in the championship match (2002, 2004, 2006), with LBSU winning all three previous matchups.

In today's action, the match was closer than the score indicated.  UC Santa Barbara took the first set at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, but the 49ers captured the doubles point and won at the other singles positions.

The 49ers grabbed the doubles point at the No. 3 slot with Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton taking a 8-4 win against Tova Hausman and Brittany Kausen.

In singles, Jessica Weeks put the 49ers up 2-0 in the match with her 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Charlotte Scatliffe at No. 2.  Hannah Grady notched a win at No. 1, as she defeated the Gauchos' Marta Simic by a 6-4, 6-2 count.  The match-clinching point came at No. 6 where Sutton notched a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Kausen.

Long Beach State moved to 18-6 on the year while UC Santa Barbara finished the season at 10-14.

UC Irvine reached the women's tennis finals for the fourth time in the last seven years as the second-seeded Anteaters defeated Cal State Northridge, 4-0, in Big West Championship action at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday.

The Anteaters improved to 16-8 on the season while the Matadors, the tournament's No. 3 seed, concluded the 2008 campaign at 14-8.  UCI takes on top-seeded Long Beach State on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. with the Big West's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships on the line.  UCI is looking to win its first-ever Big West Tournament Championship.

The Anteaters took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning the doubles point.  UCI won by identical 8-4 scores at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.  Ali Borowicz and Jessica Broadfoot defeated Canna Furuta and Kristy Fournell at No. 3 to take the point.

In singles action, UCI senior Becky Bernhard won her 12th straight match at the No. 1 spot, defeating Victoria Brymer, 6-1, 6-2.  Broadfoot was the next to finish, taking a 6-2, 6-3 win against Nina Jaworowski at No. 6.  The Anteaters ended the contest at the No. 5 position when Rebecca Kwan outlasted Brooke Doane, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
